All you need is love,” The Beatles would have us believe, and while we do all need love, it’s not all we need. Without sounding greedy, we also need hope, and something to look forward to.
As we prepare to say farewell to what has been one of the most difficult years the world has ever seen, we need to know that there is light at the end of the darkness.
News that the first in a series of Covid vaccines has been approved brings hope of brighter days to come; that we might soon be able to pick our lives back up where we left them in March 2020, and most importantly, be together again.
But the reality is that for many, life will never be the same again, and our thoughts are with all those who have suffered heartbreaking losses in 2020: those who have lost loved ones to Covid; who have not been able to say a proper farewell because of restrictions; those who have lost their businesses or jobs; those whose plans for big adventures in 2020 (getting married, going to university, enjoying a holiday-of a-lifetime etc) have been ruined.
Many people can’t wait to see the back of this year and are counting down the days until it’s gone. But it hasn’t all been hellish, and amid all the heartbreak and tragedy caused by Covid, good things have happened. Couples have got married, babies have been born, new relationships have been formed, new friendships have been forged, people have connected with others all over the world thanks the power Zoom, there has been a wave of creativity, and there have been some business success stories.
We’ve all learned what matters most to us this year: our friends and our family. We have seen in towns and villages across Dumfries & Galloway that we are always there for each other, that together we are stronger. And we know, without doubt, that nothing, not even the coronavirus, can crush our community spirit. Not only do we find ways to triumph in the face of adversity, our communities grow stronger than ever. And that should give us all hope for the future.
‘We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet For auld lang syne.”
With love and hope to you all. Stay well, and keep the faith. Wishing you all the best for Christmas and the New Year
